  • Video games.. be careful

has been a long time for a post..  here is something interesting.

    Photosensitive Seizure Warning
A very small percentage of people may experience a seizure when exposed to certain visual images, including flashing lights or patterns that may appear in video games. Even people who have no history of seizures or epilepsy may have an undiagnosed condition that can cause these "photosensitive epileptic seizures" while watching video games.

These seizures may have a variety of symptoms, including lightheadedness, altered vision, eye or face twitching, jerking or shaking of arms or legs, disorientation, confusion, or momentary loss of awareness. Seizures may also cause loss of consciousness or convulsions that can lead to injury from falling down or striking nearby objects.

  • ... humans?

The other day, there was a story on CNN.com on the use of the Web in terrorism.  It especially mentioned all these extremists videos that are readily available online.

I supposed it is due to the graphic nature of the videos, mainstream channels don't carry them (seems only Al Jazeera shows them).  So, I did a google search, and true enough, you can find plenty of the videos.  And most of them do show the beheadings of Western hostages, Iraqi translators, and other victims.

It is quite gruesome.  People slaughtered like animals.  The hostages make their pleas/statements.  Then the captors literally hack and saw off the heads and put them on the decapitated bodies, all the while chanting...  It is some disturbing stuff.  And this is not some movie, not some sick joke, not isolated incidents.  Imaging the lives we live, and the hell that goes on elsewhere -- right now.

People's capacity for .... for what we would call unthinkable barbaric acts in our sheltered society, it something that is almost .... accepted.  Something that has happened, is happening, and will keep happening in the foreseeable future.

    be warned...

  • Marathoners

This is pretty crazy, apparently tons of "old" people run marathons -- 43% of all marathoners in the US in 2004 were 40 or older. [source: TIME magazine]

No wonder I got passed by SO many old people :(

    Jury Duty

I served my country last week -- I was chosen to serve jury duty in New York County (Manhattan)'s supreme court.

They gathered about over a hundred people, then they randomly selected 19 prospect jurors for each case.  I got chosen for a civil case.  The lawyers from both sides talked to us, asked us questions, then finally picked 8 of us to be jurors.  I was one of them.  Guess I was exuding impartialness and clarity of logical cogitation ;)

It was a rather boring and small civil case.  A woman slipped and fell in a NYU gym and is suing NYU for damages.  The lawyers made their opening statements; we saw one witness take the stand; then when we came back from lunch break, and it was all over -- they settled.  Very disappointing....  I took pages of notes and made detailed sketches of the NYU gym layout

So I only served 2 days, which means it's another 2 years before I get picked again.  Hopefully next time it will be something more exciting.

Anyhow, I highly recommend the movie 12 Angry Men, which is a classic, portraying a room of deliberating jurors.
